Mithos Yggdrasill
"I hate everything about you!"
Kratos and Mithos have been many things to each other. Friends, master and apprentice, subordinate and master, enemies, subordinate and master again... and eventually enemies again, though Kratos has not quite gotten to the point where he fully experiences that at home. Even so, there's a lot of history between the two, but what else can you expect for two people who have known each other for over four thousand years? Kratos' feelings toward Mithos are a large, complex web of emotions, but the heaviest is the guilt Kratos carries with him for allowing his student to fall so far.
When Kratos arrived in Luceti, he and Mithos managed to avoid seeing each other in person for a whole month. Mithos was less than thrilled to see him of course, but after being filled in by Yuan, Kratos expected nothing else. Very soon after, Kratos engaged in battle with Mithos, who was grief-stricken over Martel disappearing from Luceti. They also had the misfortune of seeing each other during the horoscope experiment a couple months later. Kratos' emotions were out of control, but many of the things he said to Mithos were the truth, despite the experiment's influence on him. He knew things were wrong with Mithos' plans long before he actively started working against them. He knew the Mithos who was his friend, companion and student was dead long before Kratos did anything to attempt to stop him. But that only adds to Kratos' guilt--he knew, but he didn't do anything sooner.
During the Valentine's Day experiment of 2012, there was a small period of time where Kratos and Mithos began to reconcile. Due to the fact that this was caused by eating some strange fruit, it's safe to say that this was extremely short-lived (and no one was surprised.) After that, Kratos began thinking about his former pupil more, hoping he was all right. The next time he spoke to Mithos, he revealed that he never stopped caring about the boy. That went over as well as anyone can expect, and Mithos made it very clear how pathetic he found Kratos to be. Kratos, in turn, allowed Mithos to make those statements. Does he not deserve them?
Afterward, Mithos began to lose the three people who had managed to get close to him within the timeframe of a few months. First was Martel, who had returned. Second was Kaori, his best friend. Kratos managed to stumble upon Mithos after the final one--Sayo, who had become a surrogate mother of sorts to him--had vanished. It did not go well, but it stirred an urge Kratos never truly forgot about--the urge to take all of Mithos' pain away from him.
Which only made things more complicated when Mithos returned 4000 years younger in January of 2013. Unable to explain why Mithos wouldn't be welcome to live with them, Kratos brought the boy back to house 8 to live with him and Yuan. Despite it being awkward, Kratos was genuinely happy to be able to have things slightly the way they used to be, before tragedy took it all away. However, it was short lived. Not only did Mithos discover traces of who he would become, but within two months Mithos returned to normal.
No matter how one looks at it, the events surrounding Mithos are truly some of Kratos' biggest regrets.
